I make treats for my dogs using a basic oatmeal drop cookie recipe. Omit the sugar and raisins or nuts, and add some canned pumpkin or applesauce and cooked ground meat (we've used chicken, beef, lamb and turkey) and bake on a cookie sheet. These MUST be kept in the fridge or freezer since without preservatives they will spoil. They come out soft enough to be broken into pieces if you want, you can bake them a little longer for hard cookies or you could make them tiny for training treats: adjust the baking time accordingly. I don't actually use a specific recipe so I can't tell you exact amounts of meat or pumpkin or applesauce, I just add enough to turn the dough into a regular drop cookie consistency. The dogs LOVE these. I've even given them as gifts for Christmas in cute little doggy tins to rave reviews.

You need: 1 cup cornmeal 1 cup sunflower seeds 1 cup water 2 cups whole wheat flour (or regular all-purpose flour) 1 egg 1/3 cup vegetable oil mixing bowl wooden spoon cookie sheet oven mitts 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, oil, cornmeal, sunflower seeds, egg and water. 3. Sprinkle some flour on your work surface and then knead the dough. If the dough is really sticky, you can add a little more flour. Knead the dough for about a minute. 4. Pull off a small piece of dough and roll it in your hands. Roll it into a log about a half-inch thick. Pinch the ends to make a dog bone shape. You could also make letters that spell a dog's name. 5. Put your biscuits on a cookie sheet. Place the cookie sheet in the oven. Bake your bones for about 35-40 minutes, or until they are golden brown. 6. Take the biscuits out of the oven and allow them to cool first before feeding them to your dog.

Basic Dog Treats
Mix together
3 1/2 cup unbleached flour,
2 cup whole wheat flour,
1 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup skim milk powder
1 tablespoon (or 1 package) dry yeast
3 1/2 cups lukewarm chicken or meat broth
Dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm chicken or meat broth. The richer this broth is, the better your dog will like the biscuits. Let yeast broth mixture set 10 min. Then stir in flour mixture. Roll resulting dough out 1/4" thick. Cut dog biscuit shapes from dough. Brush biscuits with egg wash. Bake on greased cookie sheets at 300* for 45 min. Then turn off oven and leave in overnight to finish hardening. Makes 60 medium-sized biscuits.

Stir well. Roll out on a well-floured surface to 1/2 inch thickness. Place on ungreased cooking sheet. Bake on center rack, (275 F. or 140 C) for about 2 hours until dry and very hard. Let stand overnight to dry thoroughly. Makes 10 big bones and 14 puppy bones.
STEP 1: Know that it is wise to check with your vet before switching to homemade dog food.
STEP 2: Understand that dogs need a diet that consists of 40 percent meat, 30 percent vegetables and 30 percent starch. Follow this formula to ensure that your dog has a well-balanced diet.
STEP 3: Cook meat before feeding it to your dog.
STEP 4: Realize that organ meat (such as liver, kidneys, etc.) and eggs are very good for your dog.
STEP 5: Consider the fact that many experts believe commercial dog food is actually unhealthy for dogs. Often the meat that is used in dog food is of a quality considered unfit for humans.
STEP 6: Try making a mixture of ground turkey, rice and carrot for your own dog food. Meals made of ground beef, brown rice, brewer's yeast and carrots are also popular.
STEP 7: Rotate the foods you feed your dog so that the dog gets a variety of foods.
STEP 8: Add garlic to your dog food. Dogs enjoy the flavor and garlic is a natural flea repellent.
STEP 9: Use oatmeal, pasta, rice or potatoes for your dog's starch requirement.
STEP 10: Grind eggshells and add this to your dog's meal. Eggshells have a lot of nutrients.
STEP 11: Keep cooked dog food in the refrigerator no longer than three days.
