check available resources in your area through the united way, boys and girls clubs, veterans hospitals, aspca. You should have an interest in the area for best results.

Well, just check around and see what is available. Contacting a United Way office is one first step. You can also contact local shelters (homeless or animal), thrift stores, museums, libraries, hospitals, community centers, arts councils, or the Shakespeare Festival. You may also be able to volunteer for socio-political causes like Republicans, Democrats, Planned Parenthood, an LGBT center, etc.

Your local volunteer center can be of assistance. Volunteer centers connect people and groups with community service opportunities specific to your interests. I always recommend a Hands On Network affiliate:
http://www.handsonnetwork.org/our-network/
If you can't find one on that list, try the Points of Light Foundation. They have a directory of volunteer centers throughout the country:
http://pointsoflight.org/centers/find_center.cfm
Your volunteer center can also provide you with the appropriate community service documentation required for school as well.
Good luck!

Do you like animals? You could always volunteer your time at an animal shelter. I suggest finding something you enjoy and using that for good.
