If you suspect that your child has a delay of some sort, whether it be speech, or a syndrome such as Down's, a very good place to start asking questions is school. If she has a speech delay they have qualified experts to help with a diagnosis and treatment. I think that if you child had Down Syndrome it probably would have been discovered before now. However, some other problem may exist and you should have her evaluated promptly.

Go to her school and tell them you want her in Speech therapy and if they will not comply have a speech therapist come to your home. My son was diagnosied with speech apraxia when he was 18 months they said we would be lucky if he talked. He is now 7 and I pushed from the time we got the diagnosis until last year for speech and they would say he is where he should be, but I would insist. He has 3 years of speech therapy in home and then 3 years at school. He talks better then me or my other children and if I wouldnt of pushed he would probably not be talking. So push, push ,push until you get the answers you want. Don't give up

If your daughter is ten years old, your doctor surely would have referred her to a geneticist if he felt she had a genetic disorder like down syndrome. By ten years of age children with down syndrome have much more difficutlties that just the clarity of their speech.
Discuss the concern with your local school district. Have her assessed by a speech pathologist.
I have worked with special needs childrens for twenty-five years, and adopted a child with down syndrome twelve years ago. I am very familiar with the facial characteristics, if you are truely concerned post a picture and I will offer further advise, in regards to if she has any dismorphic facial features linked to down syndrome.

have her hearing checked and have her tested at school to see if she qualifies for speech therapy. My 8 yr old was in speech at school due to a hearing problem from age 3 until 6 and it worked wonders. He still has some works that a difficult for him but at least now people outside of the family can understand him. I.M. me for some more techniques that seem to have helped.

uh, hello...I hope you are joking. down syndrome is a genetic disorder that can be very serious. You should have a blood test done if there is any doubt. At a minimum you should discuss this with the child's Doctor. If it is not Downs they may recommend speech therapy.

A speech therapist at school should be able to help her. Also if you gather that she might have d.s have her tested so you know what ways you can help her specifically.

PS- I needed a speech therapist when I was young because I had a problem slurring my words and stuttered slightly...I am a teacher now...and only when I get really upset do I stutter.

I think if she had down syndrome you could see the physical features in her face and your doctor would have discovered this at birth.
I think the best you can do for her is enroll her in Speech Therapy and see how that works out.

If she has Downs Syndrome, she would have been diagnosed at birth. She has a speech problem and you could always take her to a speech pathologist. This will help her.

you can have her evaluated by the psychologist at her school. They have tests for this. Maybe she just is learning disabled. If she has a speech problem and you want to enroll her in speech she will also need to be tested for that as well.
