Being prone to seizures is known as having epilepsy, and it can be caused by many things. You can be born with the propensity to seizures; you can have an accident and damage portions of the brain and develope seizures, and seizures can be caused by blows to the head from abuse or even fevers that get too high. It's an overload of the circuitry in the brain, and so the brain shuts down, so to speak. There are different types of seizures. Some can cause the falling and thrashing that you may have seen, and they are called grande mal. There are petite mal, or absence seizures, where the person just sort of spaces out for a minute, but does not lose their footing or pass out.
There is treatment for all kinds of epilepsy, ranging from surgery in the worst cases, to medications taken daily which control the seizures for milder cases.
Hope this helped!
