We have interpreters for the deaf. And other tech to help out
other handicapped people. My sister was in the Navy and
all she did was type in computer word processor, picked up dead bodies of old people from the Naval Hospitals, and other non war related activities.
Why we have to be 100% healthy to join the military, that doesn't make sense?

Because many people don't understand people with disabilities.
There are people who are very ignorant.

The background of the Military is to be "fit to fight" as in, able to fight at a time of war. The Military as a whole has broaden it's job selection in order to give more jobs and openings for a person to get by. The main bodies of the Military are as goes:

Army: Ground Combat
Air Force: Air Combat
Navy/Marines: Water/Field Combat and survival

The many jobs available in today's Military help SUPPORT these needed jobs, but EVERYONE needs to be able to fight and protect when needed.

When the government accepts you, it accept your ailments too.

I had a buddy who joined the Marines during Vietnam, when he was there for a while he started feeling ill. He went to sick bay, they sent him to the hospital for tests and found he had diabetes. He was medically discharged and put on disability until he died at fifty years old.

This problem wasn't caused by the military, he had a family history of diabetes. It wasn't detected until it got to be a bigger problem, but it was now the problem of the US goverment. It cost the taxpayer over thirty years of disability plus VA care for all those years, because someone failed to do their job.

This is one reason why the disabled can't join the military!

That's a very good question. It's too bad there are so many jackasses on YA.

A good example of disabled people in the military is in Israel.

It is a requirement for all Israelis to join the military and if you are disabled they will find a post for you.

You bring up a valid question and a very good point.

Why are able-bodied soldiers performing tasks that can be done by disabled personnel, such as administrative duties, logistics, legal etc.

If we hired disabled personnel we would free up more soldiers for field duty.

actually there are many vets disabled in many ways that serve the military in varying degrees. they work in positions from the libraries to mess halls, they serve in the veterans administration, hospitals etc. so you see even though their may have been some that are considered disabled they are valuable and can contribute much.

Because serving in the military is a PRIVILEDGE, not a right, and any job can require certain minium standards without going against the ADA.

Your primary role is eliminating the enemy and that is just too much of a chore for a handicapped person.

As a military person we are always told what ever you job in the military "you are a soldier first" .... I can't see me pushing my buddies wheel chair when we have to charge a machine gun nest. Life does not have to be FAIR. the sooner you learn this, the less disapointment you'll have.

well I am glad that when my husband tells his stories of being in the navy, he at least had a real job.

BUT to answer your question, why not take it to the supreme court and DEMAND your rights...............they will tell you the same thing, ALL members must be able to be fit and war ready, even if they are doing skate jobs.............hence why certain people can not join and ones that ARE in either get down to the right size and weight or they are out.............

If the Koreans allowed the disabled to serve, that would make it much easier for us, now, wouldn't it?

Think about it, sista...
