I rank car salesmen right up there with personal injury attorneys, and they rank below sharks.
Why do they have bad raps??? Have you watched King of Cars on A & E????? I'll tell ya why....they aren't interested in what you can afford, they aren't interested in what you want or don't want...they just want the sale, right then, regardless of what the customer can afford or what they want. They lie lie lie, ABOUT EVERYTHING, from what your trade in is worth to how much a warranty costs, how the cost of car is NOT seperate fromt he trade in/down payment amount (when in fact it is), pretend they're your friend and they have your needs in mind--no they don't. I would rather have my wisdom teeth pulled out without anesthesia than have to buy a car....I hate it. I bought one last night actually and the salesman was nice (first time ever), but I still hate it, and I know I got screwed somewhere, I just haven't figured out yet where.

A lot of car salesmen are not honest as they work for the commission. If they don't make the sale they loose the money.
I personally do not believe they are all sneaky and dishonest, but their are a few that are. Rather than hold it against all salesman, it should be used against the place you were swindled by because you know darn well when a lemon is sold the other people working in the same dealership know.
I bought a van and was tricked by the owner and the salesman into thinking it was a great van and the day after the warranty ran out the van started messing up, but I don't hold it against all salesmen, just the one's who work where I got my piece of poo from.

I worked for a dealership for a long time and seriously there are honest salesmen and not so honest salesmen. The first car I purchased was from my dealership when I first started working there from a salesman that basically took me to the cleaners (I worked there! I know, I am a dumba**) Later, he got arrested for all kinds of unrelated crap. Anyway, plenty of those other salesman turned out to be awesome and had great clientel...it really depends. The stereotype is just from the idea that sometimes sales people have to stretch the truth to move these cars - especially used - and a lot of times they know NOTHING about them!

I think the movies/media have played on the "fast talking" salesmen premise for so long that it stuck. My dad was a car salesman in the 60's in Seattle, in fact, #1 at the dealership. He was honest as the day is long!

All salesmen are CROOKS by default.....especially a former family friend of ours. My parents were so nice to this young couple with an infant daughter, even helped out with grocery and rent. The dude later got a job as a car salesman so my father went to him to buy a car. Well, long story short.... he screwed my father over on a lease.
I mean it really takes someone special to screw over those who literally saved your family from being thrown out on the street.... a backstabbing salesman.

I actually have a car salesman that I've dealt with exclusively for the last 10 years. He's honest and friendly and never pressures me. He keeps in touch. Like anything else there's good ones and bad ones. The good ones last longer and make more money.

Most salesmen will tell you what you want to here. Not always looking out for you. Even good honest salesmen will only tell you what you want to here, to get the sale.
