Would it mean no store-bought breads, pre-made products, convenience foods, canned products at all? For instance, would a homemade meatloaf be made-from-scratch even if you use ketchup or barbeque sauce?

Ok, what about lasagna - would you make the pasta dough and roll it into noodles yourself?

By definition, scratch means 100% fresh ingrediants. For example, scratch marinara would start with cooked fresh tomatoes and then have all of the other spices added in. Therefore, the BBQ would disqualify your meatloaf. However, many restaurants that list themselves as a scratch kitchen will use a base sauce and then add additional ingrediants to make the sauce their own.

Made from scratch refers to what you prepare while scratching ones self! Only kidding. Made from scratch means that you don't use pre-packaged foods or marinades. You buy the ingrediants, fresh herbs etc., and follow a recipe. Very yummy!

In the case of a meatloaf, using tomato sauce or ketchup or any seasonings that you have in your cupboard would not break the rules of being made from scratch. However , if you bake a cake or biscuits, using a mix would be cheating.

Your looking in the wrong place. You start from scratch to make the meal. Stratch the ground, make a hole, plant a seed, watch it grow, harvest it then you can make bread.

i would consider that meatloaf from scratch. for example with the bread- if you are serving store bought bread as a side, that side is not from scratch but if you use the bread to make the breadcrumbs you use in your meatballs or stuffing or whatever i would say it is from scratch.

No that's extreme. It means there are no mixes, or premade{heat & eat} items.
