because my question is long and complicated. I've heard that malnutrition in children can stunt their growth and brain developement, but I was wondering whether it's is the lack of vitamins and minerals that causes this or the lack of calories? What if a child was consuming as little *** 800kcal per day but was somehow recieving all the right vitamins and minerals?

Children need lots of protein in order to build tissue, carbohydrates for energy, and fat (even cholesterol) for development of the neurological system.
How old is the child who is only getting 800kcal per day? I hope they are under 2 years!

Children need protein to build cells, Fat to store to convert to energy when food is low. So just giving vitamins is not enough to make up the shortage of calories. Also when we do not get enough food and we do not have any fat left stored; we start to digest our our own muscles. That is why in pictures of staving kids they have such thin arms and legs and are so weak. And remember the heart is a muscle.

i think both would effect body and brain development. people need both a certain amount of vitamins and minerals as well as calories to grow and develop properly.
