Your kitten has a relatively common gene mutation that causes cats to have very short or no tails. Cats who are registered as Manx can prove their bloodlines back to the isle of Manx off of England. Any other cat with a short tail is simply known as a short tail.

Because your kitten's parents are both pappered Persians, your kitten is technically a short tailed Persian. However, I don't think the Persian breed registry accepts short tailed kittens. This kitten needs to be watched carefully over the next six weeks or so. One of the problems with the gene mutation that causes a short tail is that the spinal column doesn't develop properly. Short or no tailed kittens can develop a form of spina bifida (where the spinal cord is exposed) as late as eight to ten weeks after birth. Because both parents are long tailed, you kitten is probably NOT going to develop this problem but it's something to be aware of and ask your vet to help you keep an eye on.

If you want further information, research "domestic shorttailed cats" or "Manx cats" on line.

Your kitten is going to be able to move around just fine. It's possible that it may develop a slightly "funny" gait as many short or no tailed cats have an odd hop in their step because of the shortened spinal column (a cat's spine extends into it's tail). The kitten will be able to walk and run just fine and it's balance shouldn't be affected in any meaningful way since it was born like this.

Every once in a while there is a little furry new friend who has a short tail. This is not a problem, especially from birth. This actually common among manx cats.
If the tail were to be cut off somehow when an adult, it might have to take some time to adjust, but your little one will be fine and a special kitty for it.

M'am, I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. The cat will walk just fine. It might not look as pretty in your eyes, but to the mother I bet it's a beautiful kitten. There are a lot of cats with bob tails. Some are natural and some aren't, and they all walk fine and look just as good as the next.

It's unusual in the U.S., but having a bob tail is so common among housecats in Japan that it is surprising if a cat HAS a full-length tail!

I think a bob tailed kitty is SOOooo cute; your kitty is just fine, she simply has that genetic quirk that makes the tail just a little blunt powder-puff instead of a standard tail. She's a special cat!

I'm sure if you ask the cat, she'll tell you how beautiful she is (cats are so vain)!

I've had tons of kittens with bob tails. Maybe they have some sort of bob tailed cat clear in their background. The kitten will be fine. There actually is a breed of cat with no tail. I think they are called manx.

Manx are wonderful! I have one right now, a tuxedo male, and just love him! Manx move a bit differently than other cats. They're also territorial (mine is very sweet but will fight with raccoons if they come into the yead). They have small little voices yet tend to be stocky cats when grown. They're loyal, gentle with humans, and like to play (mine knows several tricks). Count yourself lucky if you've gotten a Manx!!!

a queen (unspayed female) can mate with several toms( unnuetered males). it is possible that your queen mated with a manx tom too without you knowing. manx cats are cats with short tails or no tails. and yes your surviving kitty will be able to walk. if you or your vet doubts that this kitten is a manx, ask your vet about the special treatment that this kitty needs to adapt to its inconvienence. this cat will turn out to be very special, one that you will always remember as the cat that survived.

PS: a good name for this kitty is survivor if you're looking for a name too.
