A kitten can be a great companion to have. However, if you have never owned a cat before, I recommend adopting an older cat from the shelter. Older cats at shelters are often euthanized because they are not considered adoptable.
Pros of getting a kitten:
(1) Longtime companion
(2) Stress reliever, someone to talk to and who can provide comic relief
(3) You learn how to be responsible
Cons:
(1) A kitten will try your patience by getting into all kinds of trouble: knocking things over, scratching furniture, biting
(2) You must feed the cat regularly and have a means to feed it when you are away from home from an extended period of time
(3) You must be willing to pay for vet bills
If your mother isn't willing to help take care of the cat, then don't get one, even if she says you can have one. You might not agree, but children don't make great caregivers of pets. You can't forget to feed the cat, put fresh water down, or neglect cleaning the litter pan. Cats are not amusements. If you get a kitten, you have to be committed to providing many years of care -- as much as 20 years.
Do not let your cat outdoors without a harness and a leash. Automobiles, animals, people, chemicals, the weather, etc., are not friendly to cats. Outdoor cats live only a few years, on average. Indoor cats live more than 10 years, on average.
Again, if you have never had a cat before, consider adopting an older cat. Older cats are in desperate need of good homes, and they are low-maintenance compared to kittens. Kittens are full of mischief and energy. An adult cat just wants a nice, comfortable place to sleep, food, water, a clean litter pan, and a window perch.
Also, you must understand that kittens grow up. That cute and cuddly fuzz ball that likes making you laugh and weighs only a few pounds will soon grow to weigh perhaps as much as 14 pounds and not be as exciting as a kitten.
By adopting an older cat, you will be able to learn to care for a cat without the aggravation of constant mischief.

Pros
Cats can be very loving.
They can be cute to watch and play with.
They are very clean animals.
They are usually great hunters if you have mouse problems.
Cons
Cats can be very loving and demanding of attention.
Litter boxes are smelly and need to be cleaned often
Cats should be fixed while still you, you don't want a male scenting over the house or a female in heat yowling all night.
Cats still need to have shots and regular check ups with a vet.
Kittens are not quiet, they make a lot of noise playing.
Kittens will climb curtains and legs.
That all said, cats can be wonderful loving friends. Each one has a different personality and can keep you amused for hours. Having grown up in a home where there were always cats around I can tell you that they can range from protective of people to not like being touched without their asking you to first. They can want to play in the middle of the night or thing that moving things under the covers are to be attacked. The one thing you can be sure of never being with a cat around is bored.

I think cats are fairly low maintainence. Personally my cat is normally a very quiet cat except he will rarely start yelling in the middle of the night. However he is the first cat I've ever had who has done this. Some cats are really affectionate and may require more attention which I suppose could bother your mom. Overall I think a cat is less work than a dog (especially puppies versus kittens) and tend to be quieter. Just a side note I never had any trouble house training a cat. They always just seem to understand when you put them in a litter box.

Pros:
They are an awesome companion
They are loyal
They are fun to play with
They can always make you laugh
Cons:
Litter box but if you really love your cat its sooo worth it!
I have had cats for as long as I can remember! And the only times I ever regreted it was one time when I woke up with my cat chewing my hair in the middle of the night, but I can laugh at that now. And the other time I regret it is when I have lost a cat because it left a really big empty spot in my heart.
I honestly can say you wont regret getting one!

A kitten is one of the easiest animals to look after. Make sure it has a litter box. Take it to the litter bix and scratch it's foot around in it. That takes care of the house breaking. All thats left to do is feed it and love it. They are usually very quiet. The biggest problem would be the scratching of furniture and usually you can teach it to us a scratching post instead of the furniture.
