You can usually go into the vets office and pick up flea meds without bringing the cat...there is usually no exam fee(unless you bring the cat in to get an exam at the same time) only cost of the flea med. Also if you don't know how or can't apply/give the flea meds yourself and you do bring the cat there is usually no charge.

I can't answer that but I can offer a cheap solution. Get a wire flea comb. Fill your bathroom sink with baby shampoo and water - you need alot of bubbles. No, dip the flea comb into the water leaving the bubbles on the comb and comb the cat. Every few combs, check for fleas and redip. Keep going until you comb the cat completely. Dry the cat, drain the sink. Do this every day til you see no fleas, then once a week four at least 6 months - fleas can live that long. It's alot easier on the cat's skin.
Also, treat your carpet to deflea it too. Big box of table salt, sprinkle salt on the carpet and let it sit for at least 24 hours. Then vacuum. Fleas are killed.
Just a few cheap ways to take care of fleas.

depending on where you live, there will probally be an exam fee (30-40 dollars). Then they will probally dispense frontline pluse (probally around 40-50 dollars for a 3 pack). You could probally find frontline plus on line for cheaper. (look at doctors foster and smith). Treat for a few months, make sure you vacuum your house well, including where the cats sleep and under furniture. Get a pet freindly flea spray for the house. The one thing you may need the vet for is dewormer. Fleas transmit tapeworms so it would be a good idea to get them dewormed (praziquantal is for tapeworms)

They would charge exam fee plus whatever it cost for treatment
They would possibly provide you something like Revolution. Revolution is a topical liquid medication. It is used for flea prevention, heartworm prevention, and prevention and control of ear mites and sarcoptic mange. It's applied once a month, conveniently on the skin. It may not be used on cats less than 8 weeks old. Each product has 6, (once a month) applicators or 6 month supply.

My vet charges 22.00 a visit, which is really cheap. He or she will apply a topical treatment that will kill the fleas. It is used monthy and can be expensive. You can buy the treatment at a pet store. Frontline is a good one. I think it is 8.00.The trip to the vet is a good investment if your cat has never a checkup or shots. The vet checks other things too, like the cats weight and overall health.
