What is the relationship between pulmonary capillary length and gas exchange (oxygen and carbon dioxide)?

The longer the pulmonary capillary, the more gas is exchanged from the lungs to the blood-stream. (Oxygen in .. CO2 out)

I would think that if the capillary were longer (and didn't get any skinnier) this would increase the surface area, which would make gas exchange easier and faster. But I'm not sure exactly what you're asking.
