Do they put their own health at risk...i mean...because of radiation involved? If not, why is it then that they get paid so much?!

Radiologists interpret images, and other doctors rely on those interpretations to make critical decisions. (Like, to go to surgery, or put a tube the size of your finger into someone's chest)
If something is missed, they are liable. You wouldn't want a radiologist to miss YOUR tumor, would you?
They go to medical school and go through a residency like every other doctor, and it is a competitive residency to get into.
They get paid so much because they have the training and knowledge that you don't. (And the malpractice insurance premiums that you don't have, too.)

Because they went to 4 years of college, 4 years of med school (8 years of school they had to pay for, often at over 200,000 dollars), did a 4-year residency and possible fellowship (both with low pay) and have thus spent every waking moment of the last 12 years or so becoming experts in reading x-rays.
Also, most specialists are paid a lot more than generalists.
Usually the techs are the ones putting their health at risk, but with modern precautions, nobody should have too much of a risk.

Yes over a long period of time. It is a great career move if you have years and years to prepare for being a doctor and getting licensed as one. It's not a get rich quick career, in other words.

Interpreting films is something of an art, and there's the matter of supply-and-demand. The radiation risks don't come into play.

health risk is one thing.
knowledge and skill are another.
kinda same reason that professional photographers are paid good money - everybody can take a picture, but it takes a pro to take a really good one.

AS with anesthesiologists, they are able to be extremely efficient with their time.
So the internists and surgeons want to kiss *** with family's=-great. Let us work our *** off for cash.
