Death is something that we are not prepared for. In school you get a one hour video about death called "the fall of freddy the leaf"

As a hospice volunteer I can tell you that I deal with death on a daily basis and it is something no one is prepared for. Its because you cannot avoid death, its permanent and we all want to live as long as possible.

We avoid it, yet are somewhat intrigued by death, thats why so many people look when drinving by an accident.

Death is a touchy subject for some because nobody knows what happens to a person when he dies - the fear of the unknown.

As an atheist, I don't fear death. Everybody dies eventually and there's nothing that can be done to prevent it, so there is no point in worrying about or being afraid of it. I can understand why someone who believes in a contradictory, furious, jealous, judgemental God who tortures his own children for eternity (or forces them to remain with him forever) would be scared of dying, though.

Because the common thing to tell someone is "Don't cry, she's in heaven now". Most religions (not all, but the mainstream one's at least) sanitize death and are in denial about the true nature of death. No one likes to think about the fact that when you die, you could very well be gone forever. They do not let people properly grieve for their loved ones who have passed on.

Death is an experience that no-one can give us first-hand evidence of what it is like. People tend to be at least apprehensive of the unknown.

Just imagine never having consciousness again that's a creepy thought.
Not what I believe in, but none the less a creepy thought.

The majority fear it because they should. The Spirit knows what the intellect refuses to believe.
