Starting salary for NYPD is $25,100 the first year (but goes up quickly each year) plus overtime and other allowances. Given this, unless you move into an apartment with someone (look on craig's list) for a place by yourself you are gonna be paying at least $1,400 for a studio.
Queens and Brooklyn are cheaper (especially the further you get from Manhattan).

I wrote a long business plan using the typical salary of an NYPD officer ($32,000/year) vs. the average apartment rent in new York City ($1500/month) and used that to prove that something has to be done to make living here more affordable. A lot of NYPD live in Hobken orJersey City to make up for their crappy pay and the high rent.
I have worked in NYC real estate for 2 years-don't move here without a financial safety net and a solid plan of what you want to do.

that all depends where in Manhattan.... if you looking midtown... only if you are rich... the rent there is 3000 for an studio.... going downtown is almost the same but you might find for 3000 a 1 bedroom apt...going uptown, well you might find section 8 which is the goverment apts or pay between 1300 to 2000 for 1 bedroom apt and telling you the truth, I don't like uptown Manhattan... like everybody else is saying, I think a better option is queens, Brooklyn... i live in queens, there are nice neighborhoods very close to Manhattan midtown, there is sunnyside which is 10 mins to midtown and also Astoria which is 10 mins too and is very nice neighborhood, there are a lot of greeks and italians.. is like a mini Manhattan there.. little cafes at the corners, nice restaurants and nightclubs...and the rent could go between 1100 or 1200 to 1800 for i bedroom apt, of course if you chose the 1800 is a very nice apt...

If you want an apartment below 125th Street in Manhattan, you are going to have to cough up a minimum of $2000 a month. There are still some good bargains up in Inwood and Washington Heights (2 bedrooms for $1700-$2000) but that probably won't last.
If you want to get a good idea of what kind of apartments are available where and for how much, try looking on www.craigslist.com.

If you want to work for the NYPD forget Manhattan.
You'll have to live in Brooklyn, Queens, or the Bronx. A studio in Manhattan starts at $1200/ mo. And that's a SMALL studio.

You know every singe apartment does not charge the same for rent. It really depends WHERE in Manhattan you are looking. You might want to do some background research.

2,000 per month, and that just a bare essentials! Think of living in another borough, like Queens or Brooklyn. As a matter of fact Brooklyn is getting to be a desirable location again!
