Good question! First He was "I AM", then Yaweh, then Jehovah, then LORD, and somewhere along the way, became God. But there were lots of "gods", so where did the word come from?!?

You should have been paying attention to the sermon instead. Nonetheless a good question, even if you were daydreaming.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary has this to say. Middle English, from Old English; akin to Old High German 'got' god. 1. capitalized: the supreme or ultimate reality: as a) the Being perfect in power, wisdom, and goodness who is worshiped as creator and ruler of the universe.b) Christian Science: the incorporeal divine Principle ruling over all as eternal Spirit: infinite Mind.
2: a being or object believed to have more than natural attributes and powers and to require human worship; specifically:one controlling a particular aspect or part of reality.
3. a person or thing of supreme value
4. a powerful ruler.

The word god is a title, like president or king. The Judeo-Christian God is addressed as Elohim, LORD, and sometimes Jehovah or Yahweh. Although the last two names are of human origin.

Almost all religions have a god. Whatever his people may call him, she or it. God is an all encompassing word. When you speak, it is proper to call your god by name. So as not to be confused with other gods or goddess.

It derives from the German word Gaut. With the capital G it comesfrom the 4th century Gothic translation of the NT by Bishop Ulfilas.

All due respect, but you might want to look into a different church if they're not teaching the proper word. God put it in mans mind to call him God, because man couldn't comprehend who God was/is, and it would be easier for us to remember him as such:)
Blessings!
