feed less, exercise more,,,, your dog may big large for his breed,,, if he isn't a show prospect , that was the reason why.. oversized isn't necessarily a bad thing,, just make sure he isn't fat

Read the standard on the Shih Tzu. www.akc.org
Your dog is within the proper weight range of 9 to 16 lbs.

I have a yorkie who is about 3 pounds overweight. It doesn't seem like much but for a little dog it is. I never give her people food except for the occasional carrots that she loves!

Our vet recommended that she have more exercise. My husband tries to walk her daily. She just loves it. We also try to throw her rope and ball and play fetch while we are watching tv.

We feed her Eukanuba. We have started using a measuring cup to measure her food so she is not overfed.

Our vet also recommended that if the above doesn't work to switch to the 'diet' or low fat Eukanba version. We haven't done this yet, but it's our next step.

The website says the AVERAGE weight is 14 lb which means it could be a little less or a little more. He is a fine weight, unless he looks chunky, but with 1 extra lb I wouldn't worry.

Never fear - one of my little Shih Tzu girls is 19.8 lbs and perfectly healthy. She has a larger body structure and is very muscular. If you're concerned, you should ask your vet about his body composition. Somtimes extra weight isn't all fat. :)

Run your hands down his sides-you should be able to feel his ribs without too much pressure.
