They have a product at Home Depot or Menards called Renewal. It's by the floor cleaners and can go over any type of old floor finish. If you don't know what it on the floor as finish, be careful about putting on a commercial floor finish as it very well could ruin the whole floor. You can apply it with a sponge mop or I like to use those hand-held paint pads screwed onto a broom handle

Well, I know they have the big refinishing floor sanders, specifically for that purpose, but that would probably cost more than you want to spend...You might just be able to do "some" sanding on the worst parts with a belt sander, or finishing sander, and then restain them, and then polyurethane the whole floor. Would throw rugs or an area rug be a good option for you? They can make a big difference, and add alot of character to a room:)
Good Luck!!

most likely it's an oil based urethane on them, move furniture out of room and put a coat down, now might be tough for you cause of the weather, see you don't want to breath this too long so if you can put it down and crack some windows opened you'll be alright, the oil based will somewhat darken the scratches and blend in OR you could darken your scratches by finding the correct color stain or even using a brown colored shoe polish and scuff them up with 100 grit sandpaper (lightly) and top coat with a water based urethane and the smell isn't so bad and dries quicker, not a hard job, good luck!
