Generally there are community mental health clinics where treatment is on a sliding fee basis and medications are often free...check them out or call your closest hospital and ask to speak with someone from the Dept of Psychiatry....they may be able to refer you to an income based provider

you can get prozac as a generic, and it is very cheap. Some doctors will give you samples if prozac is not suitable. If you have no money for a family doctor, this will not help you. There is a lot of good advice others have given, so I'm not duplicating it here. A suicide hotline usually has resources to give you-you don't have to be suicidal to call these lines unless they specifically say so.
Some things you can do that may help a little bit in the short run:
Make sure you get as much sunlight as possible.
Caffeine does help if you do not have anxiety with your depression
You could try st. John's wort
Try and exercise some every day
Go to a support group, talk to a minister, and/or tell your friends how you feel so they can spend more time with you.
Listen to upbeat music, nothing that is a downer.
If you are a poor person, you could check into a hospital, if you are so depressed it is a medical emergency. You won't have any assets they could take (can't take your home or a basic under $5000 car or personal stuff that isn't valuable-specifics depend on the state you're in)
If you have a history of severe depression, your county social services may help you. I get county services because I am bipolar, so they send a worker out here once a month, but I could have a worker once or twice a week if I wanted. I also go to a "drop in center" which is a social group for people with mental illnesses. The social support has helped me a lot.

There must some kind or form of a psch. hospital that can help. Here in Canada it's a different matter we have coverage, sadly for those of you whom are in the states it's almost non existing.
Can you not go onto social assistance or something of the likes? I wish I knew of a place that you could turn for help.
I have started a group for teens so that they may be able to talk to me as I've always had a lot insight and experience having anxiety/panic attacks and depression, plus I'm meds. to help me cope too since I was in my 20's with my first o.d. haven't for the past 2 yrs.
If you want to talk to someone whom has been around and can share your angst, I'm here.

I've been in that position myself before, but usually you can get free help from a hot-line, crisis center! Or you can go on an AA crisis line and they will be glad to help even if you are not an alcoholic,. But I would try a crisis hot-line,. and they can usually give you a list of different counselors that can and will help for free, or at a very low cost to you.

There are community mental health centers in almost every city in the country. They charge by your income and most of them will be about 10 dollars a visit. You can see a therapist and psychiatrist if necessary. Normally the centers are by county/parish...so check your phone book. Don't wait. No reason to be miserable.
