How to you understand Matthew 9:14-17?

Matthew 9:14-17 (New King James Version)
14 Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”
15 And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse.
17 Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

Jesus gives these illustrations: “Nobody sews a patch of unshrunk cloth upon an old outer garment; for its full strength would pull from the outer garment and the tear would become worse. Neither do people put new wine into old wineskins; but if they do, then the wineskins burst and the wine spills out and the wineskins are ruined. But people put new wine into new wineskins.” What do these illustrations have to do with fasting?

Jesus was helping the disciples of John the Baptist to appreciate that no one should expect his followers to conform to the old practices of Judaism, such as ritual fasting. He did not come to patch up and prolong old worn-out systems of worship that were ready to be discarded. Christianity would not be made to conform to the Judaism of the day with its traditions of men. No, it would not be as a new patch on an old garment or as new wine in an old wineskin. Matthew 9:14-17; Mark 2:18-22; Luke 5:33-39; John 3:27-29.

16 17 I think talk about the new covenet with Jesus also needs a new law and not the old tradtions of the Pharisees or something like that. 14 15 mean that the disiples cant be sad because Jesus is with them but they will be once he leaves

Jesus was saying that while he was on earth, it was a time of celebration, not of mourning. So, it was right of his disciples not to fast. (vs. 14 & 15)
He was also saying that He comes bringing a new covenant. It will not simply be an ammendment to the old covenant, which wouldn't fit and would cause the old covenant to be destroyed. It is a totally new covenant that replaces, yet preserves the old covenant. (vs. 16 & 17)

Christ is the bridegroom His church the bride.

You don't put new truth on an old lie, it will pucker up.

You don't put new truth into a person of old doctrine, you need a new vessel.

The modern day figure of speech would be,
you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Similar to "You must be born again". You cannot introduce the Holy Spirit (the new wine) into the old religion (keeping the Jewish Law - old wine-skins) - it will burst them wide open.
