Antibiotics are a type of medicine. Some kinds of antibiotics are: Sulfonamides, penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, carbacephems, monobactams, tetracyclines, macrolides, ketolides, quinolones, aminoglycosides, and a few other kinds. These are the class names not the specific drug names. There are several drugs in each of these classes. Each class is specialized for treating a certain infection. Some of them are bacteriostatic antibiotics, which stop growth or reporduction of bacteria. Other kinds are bactericidal antibiotics, which actually kill the bacteria.
