It depends a bit on his level of social skills. A young dog raised with other dogs should have a sense by at least six months old if another dog is serious about biting. Before that, many dogs will have already learned how to read other dogs, but there are certainly many who don't. A dog that doesn't have lots of opportunity to learn social skills from other well-mannered dogs may be much older, or even may never truly learn how to read when another dog is serious.

If your dog is a puppy they go through a sensitive period at about 9-16 weeks. If they are attacked at that age or even after, they can become dog aggressive for the rest of their lives. We need to protect our dogs from other dogs. Even small puppies know when another dog meant to bite them. That is how their mother teaches them manners and how the littermates establish a hierarchy. I hope I understood your question.

You are the one that has to monitor that. Unfortunately, we humans can't always tell either. Some dogs act friendly enough until you get close & then they lunge.

It's best to sit your dog down when another dog approaches & talk calmly to him until the owner of the other dog tells you their dog is friendly. Hold him on a tight leash while the other dog & him meet then slowly let them have some leeway.
