Go to www.irs.gov and print out a couple of Forms W-4 (the link is on the left hand side of the page). Work them side by side - one for you and one for your wife. Do not bank on being able to claim anything for employment expenses as you have the 2% floor on your Adjusted Gross Income. Treat that as a wee bonus at the end of the year.

You are joking that a law enforcement officer has to buy his own ammo right? Surely. Are some authorities so tight? You, sir, deserve undying respect for doing a dangerous job whilst paying out of your own pocket for your own protection. The most dangerous thing in my job is a papercut.

You can claim up to three legally, what you choose to claim (1,2, or 3) is up to you. Might I suggest claiming zero takes the most out, but you'll probably get a refund at the end of the year, so it's like a mini noninterest appreciating savings account. That's if you have a tendency to spend money the second you get it. Otherwise, just claim the three and get the most back for you and your family immediately.
