If you live with them

2007-01-21 10:28:02 · answer #1 · answered by zen522 7 · 2 1

If you live under their roof, then you go by their rules. That is just plain respect. I had to live with my parents for a year once and I was in my 30's. I didn't have to follow any specific rules like a kid but I didn't just do what I wanted. And that philosphy applies to anyone no matter what country your in.

p.s. And in the USA, you are an adult when you turn 18. You can't drink til your 21 or own a handgun, but you can do just about anything else including vote.

Of course... if the drinking age in Ontario is 19 that means any 19 year old can get loaded. Too bad you didn't discover this sooner... some Canadian provinces (like Alberta) have 18 as the drinking age. You could have been wasted a year earlier.

yes they are. If you look at it this way, when I go to work there are rules to working there. When I get in a car there are rules to driving it. When I walk on a sidewalk, there are rules as to how to do that in a safe manner etc. Same goes for living with other people. With parents a bit more stressful because they make the rules. Some people are fortunate enough at a young age to have parents who are willing to let them have a lot of freedom in this world to learn to live by the rules of the society they live in and to learn how to pay the consequences of their own actions. Simply put, as long as I live with other people there are always going to be rules to abide by, compromises to be made and communication to be had. Open the line s of communication, ask why the rules are the way they are, be willing to listen without interrupting, make sure that you understand why they feel the way they feel even if you don't agree, and set about doing the adult responsible things that need to be done in order to earn trust and be consistent, I guarantee things will change for the better. Best regards to you and to yours.

I don't live in Canada but here in the U.S., even though you are 18 you are not of legal age to vote or drink, etc. until 21. If you live in your parents' home, eat the food they purchase, use the utilities they pay for and wear the clothes they purchase for you, yes....they have the right to ask you to participate in the family as another adult. If you pay room and board, then that is another story. Without more details, cannot help.

If you live at home & don't contribute to the running of the home (such as paying rent) then yes, they are still "your parents" & can tell (although it would be nice if they asked) you to do just about anything they want (within reason of course).

Don't forget to get respect you have to earn respect and if you are being disrespectful toward them, your life is going to pretty much suck !!

By the way - it's Ontario, Canada !!

18 is legal age ....at 18 you are resonsible for your actions & can be held accountable in court.

If the 18yr old lives with the parents - the kid has to follow the rules of the house....However , if the kid moves out on his/her own - they can make their own rules. Keep in mind though - b4 making any decisions that you will regret - your parents love you more than anyone else on the face of the earth - there's no one anywhere that would do for you what your parents would .....So b4 telling them to jump off the nearest bridge just b/c you're 18 & wanna do whatever you wanna do - think it through - b/c who would be the first person you would call if something terrible happened to you????????

Parents are always going to try and boss you around. Try moving out if you feel you are independent enough and start living your own life. As long as anyone has control over you, you are going to be bossed around.

It depends on how much resposibility the 18 year old is taking within the household as well as honesty...

Yes and No. You're 18. You're legally allowed to move out. But if you still live in their house, then sadly yes.

I suggest moving out ASAP. I'm 15, and I'm want out of my house.

As long as they pay the bills for you--that's worldwide....you don't want to be bossed around: pay your own bills--meaning, move out and support yourself....
