He might have some sort of allergy. He might be creating what is called a hot spot. It's a skin irritation caused by the dog chewing on the same spot for a while. His skin might be irritated from the central heat being turned on during this cold weather. All the allergens that have been sitting the heating ducts is kicked whe the heater is turned on. So the allergens might just be irritating him.

allergy, dry skin? I have a pup that does it too, and he has no fleas either.
Just try bathing him in a gentle soap the next time he needs a bath, and check around, maybe they have a shampoo for itch relief.
I wouldnt worry, dogs just bite and scratch for no apparent reason, I think sometimes anyway, since there is no apparent reason for our dog itching either

take him to the vet... my dogs have done that before and they get something called a hot spot. it itches and they can bite/scratch it raw and it can do harm to them. the Doctors can put something on it to make it stop burning.

or it could simply just be allergies. but either way, safest bet is to take him to the vet.

skin allergies , boredom, bad habit - try giving him more exercise ( make sure his back leg is not lame)

My dog does that sometimes. Either he has a really bad itch and it comes to him sometimes when you happen to see him, or he has flees.
