i've been told not to talk of God, it bothered this person, but i had to watch the dot on their head the whole time they ranted and raved about their religion and had to accommodate their religious beliefs, but i couldnt say merry Christmas.
i have been told i cant smoke, its my body, my health and my choice. how can the government justify the infringement on my civil liberties, and why can i not retaliate with free speech without being sued for liable. can some one please explain.

You may smoke if you choose to, just don't force your second hand carcinogens on me, emphysema boy.

You are free to believe in any god you choose, just don't preach at me, or expect me to accept or respect laws written from a faith based perspective, jesus boy.

You can express any opinion on any topic you like. Your right to express your opinion does not exceed my right to disagree with it. If your opinion is libelous, slanderous or just insulting, then expect to hear from my lawyer, or feel my boot in your teeth.

"i've been told not to talk of God, it bothered this person, but i had to watch the dot on their head the whole time they ranted and raved about their religion and had to accommodate their religious beliefs, but i couldnt say merry Christmas." You leave out where you were told this. If it was at school or work, then the other should have been told not to do/say anything on the topic as well.

"i have been told i cant smoke, its my body, my health and my choice. how can the government justify the infringement on my civil liberties,..." Most people will argue this by claiming that medical studies have proven second hand smoke is harmful...which is WRONG. The EPA had a study thrown out (one that was most often used by the 'anti-smoking' agenda) because they attempted to twist the data to prove it was harmful...when the data pointed to NO IMPACT WHATSOEVER. The World Health Organization buried a report that showed children in houses with smokers were 22% less likely to develop certain kinds of cancer later in life (this report came to light eventually, via the British press). Some towns and states have had public smoking bans lifted because of their claims that it was "medically proven", when in fact, all of the studies (done with NO agenda have proven nothing of the sort).

"...and why can i not retaliate with free speech without being sued for liable." You can, providing you don't lie.

Jo, hi! I believe you can smoke till you choke up, I believe you have all the right to believe in whatever God, and express your heart out. However, you happen to live in a community of people who has some rights due them too, which is why, like this Yahoo question and Answer project there are guidelines to follow and one of them is "NO SPAM PLEASE". If we won't have that guidelines there would be no order and chaos would ensue. I believe you too have a community where you live and even if your community don't have written guidelines, there is such things as "psychological guidelines" which means the use of our common sense. Problem is that some people may have the sense but it is not "common".

You are free to smoke, alright, but do it where no other people would be bothered. Please consider that the smoke that you blow out of your mouth or nose is harmful to health. So, please have some common sense.

You are free to believe in your God. Unless you have the proper authority to preach, please keep your belief to your self. You can acquire this authority, though, by enrolling in a formal bible study, then after some time, you can be a preacher with authority. Who knows, you may be another world evangelist or may be you would become a Pope. Nobody knows really what you can be. But you can be what you want to become if you go for it with some seriousness and focus. The key is be responsible in whatever you do.

You can say whatever you want, but, in the courts of law, there is a saying that goes "everything you say will be charge against you". So, anytime you have something to say just make sure that you don't incriminate yourself and you don't infringe on the right of others and as the bible says "don't bear false witness against your brother".

Jo, you seem to have a personal problem, may I suggest, you consult a spiritual adviser for your sake and that of others too.

I not only believe you have the right I too am also one just like yourself. I have my belief in God the father and I read my bible and watch christian television, but I smoke and call it an excuse but it has been told of a person that smokes "we don't like the smell in our church"...however the drunks have open doors to come in??? and the best part they drove! Least when I smoke in my own home Im in my right mind and when I drive somewhere smoking on my cigarrett--it won't be because my vision was blurred and my mind is delayed...but drinking is legal and allowed. I hope someone does come up with a rights for ALL, cause it sure seems they pick and choose what suits at the moment and alot more people end up paying for it.

Sorry, I can't explain why our government is catering to people who take offense to certain words. I don't know when it actually became law that you can't have a different opinion because it might hurt someones feelings, I thought it was free speech and different ideas that made our society great.
You should have the right to smoke all you want, it is your body, and I really don't care what you do to it. I would just rather you not smoke in front of me when I am eating. But you know there is simple solution to such a problem, I don't have to eat where you are smoking, I have to right to eat somewhere else, so you can smoke all you want.
You can wish me a Merry Christmas all you want, but please don't talk to me about your God, because I won't talk to you about mine. And together we can enjoy each other's company nicely.
Free speech is for everyone, that is something that liberals always do seem to forget.

You have the right to talk of God, to smoke and to express yourself with free speech. YOu also have the responsibility to respect that right in others. If someone asked you not to speak of God, then went on about your religion, you would have the "right" to either walk away or politely disagree with them. The law does not say you cannot smoke, but you are limited as to where because your decision to do so affects not only yourself but the people around you. You can use free speech to express your opinions, but NOT to liable people. Use good judgment, respect the rights and dignities of others just you want your rights and dignities respected, and all will be fine.

Well some non believers can't hold office in some states. Most people would not vote for one. Bush Sr. thinks we should not be considered citizens. I personally can't manage to get my hoped for career happening because other people won't let me for lack of work experience. And so on..

We all have our injustices, it's not just you, so stop whining. At least you are still able to do your god thing if you simply went away from that person. You can go smoke in some other location, you can still say "Christmas" to your loved ones, say whatever you want depending on the company around you. While an atheist however still can not hold office, still would not be voted for. And I can't force people to let me have my career.

If you think you have to speak for God to hear, you have a weak god. God knows every your thought (in your case all both of them). Talking to God in public is an excuse for someone needing attention. TV Evangelists do it for money. You can smoke where it won't contaminate my lungs and where the residue will not cause me a problem. Don't flick your butts out the car window when driving. It is littering and I always have my camera phone handy to get your crime and license plate number. An alternative to smoking, chewing, and snorting is the Mail Pouch *********. Be sure to either be wearing depends or have brown pants, shoes, and sox when using one. You also have a right to free speech to air ideas. You do not have a right to attack others with you speech as Alexander Hamilton (the $10,00 bill guy) did. Aaron Burr isn't around to shoot you, but you can end up in court. Slander is not part of freedom of speech.

Keep up the great job producing carbon dioxide for plants!

You have a right to talk about God.
However, if you know that your opinions will not be received, what is the use.
You have a right to smoke, but the government can tell you whether you can do it in public places.
For instance, you cannot smoke in a theater, it obscures the screen.
We have many rights, but we cannot always exercise them whenever and wherever we desire.
You have the right to freedom of speech, but you do not have a God given right to tell people off, or demean people.
If the right comes from the people, the people can determine the parameters of that free speech.

Yes, I think you should have those rights--and so do many Libertarians.

It's sad how we keep losing our freedoms. If the "fairness Doctrine" goes through, our free speech will be limited even further.

This will cause us to have governmental monitoring of talk radio and if a station allows someone to express a political view, the radio station would be required to have an opposing view expressed on that subject---even if ratings make it unprofitable. Privately owned radio stations would no longer be allowed to make the decision on the content of political views that it chooses to air. I guess they are thinking that we are too stupid to change the radio station if we don't want to hear what's on it........

I do understand you here, and I do believe in the right to freedom of speech (with the exception of fighting words) and I do believe as a free country we have the right to be free..
re the smoking- that is your choice--- however your body is the temple of the Lord, why then would you want to pollute it?
