I have a 1994 jeep cherokee automatic and in the owners manual it says that while driving in the snow on paved roads that it should be in 4wd full-time. I was driving in the snow the other day and when i shifted into 4H the dash said part-time. Does anyone know how to put it in full-time? Or does my jeep only have part-time and not full-time? Thanks

Alright so i guess my jeep only has part-time 4wd then. In the owners manual it says not to have it in part-time while driving on dry surfaces. Why is that? Are you not suppose to go above a certain speed with it on? Can I drive on a wet highway with it on?

In Part-Time 4x4: the front and rear drive-shafts rotate at the same speed -always. Your transfer case, the unit that ties the front and rear together, is not differentiated. In a turn the front wheels need to turn at different speed than the rear wheels and would quickly wear-out the gears in your transfer case if you did this on dry pavement. Your transfer case is very strong and a few mistakes won't significantly damage anything.

The good news is that this is a shift-on-the-fly transfer case. Therefore engage 4x4hi as needed and disengage when on dry surfaces. You can keep it in 4x4 while driving in the snow, even over dry patches if you don't turn. You may wish to shift in/out of 4X4hi often during a trip through the snow.
I engage PT 4X4 when pulling the boat off the ramp, but disengage before making any turns.
There is no speed limit to shift in/out of PT 4X4hi. I've tried it at 70 with no issues (yes, that was too fast for the conditions)

The cherokee has one of 2 4wd systems-Command Trac which has a choice of 2wd high,4wd high, neutral,or 4wd low or Select trac which has a choice of 2wd high,4 wd high, full-time 4wd high, neutral,or 4wd low. Your console where the transfer case shifter is located should be marked and it will say if you have full time 4wd available...if it's not listed then you have only part time 4wd which is fine to use in snow on paved roads..just do nor use it on paved roads when dry or just wet.

part time 4WD locks the transfer case so both front and rear axels rotate at the same speed. you cant use it on dry surfaces because it will wear the crap out of your tires and put a lot of wear on 4WD components. I wouldnt even use it on wet roads. I would only use it in snow or ice.

you only have part time 4wd so when in 4 high you can only go 55 tops any more and your risking damage to your transfer case. besides you dont need it when the road is dry because you dont have any possible loss or loss in traction like you would in snow or wet pavement so putting it in 4 high only makes your jeep consume more gas and risk you blowing up your transfer case.

It depends on what 4WD system your jeep has. It can be either Quadra-Drive, Select-Trac or Quadra-Trac. Quadra-Drive doesn't have a 2WD position, it is in 4WD all the time. Quadra-Trac has 4WD part time, 4WD full time, along with neutral and low range. Select-Trac is only a part time 4WD system which has 4WD high range Neutral, and Low range.
