I wear a 36 F, have really wide shoulders, and I'm 5'3" so here's what I did.
I tried on a lot of dresses, with the idea that a halter or dress with wide straps would be best for me. I was in a wedding where I had to wear a strapless dress and let's just say that was a loooonng day! I was also looking for an elegant dress without a lot of "stuff" on it--you know, no butt bows, no crusty beading.
I didn't rule anything out, though. If I liked the dress on the hanger, I tried it on! It takes some time, but you never know what you might find.
I ended up going with a diamond-white, sleeveless, satin, slightly higher waist dress. It wasn't an empire waist but it did sit higher than my natural waist.
It had wide straps and some beading across the bodice and a line of beading around the waist. It also had sort of a v-neck.
It accentuated the best part of me without anything hanging out.
Take a few close friends and your mom and maybe his with you. They'll be honest with you.
You'll know when you've found "the dress". :)
Congratulations and good luck!!

Hi! It's sounds like you are perfect. Most any gown would look great on you. I would go with a very simple dress with straight lines. Ruffles or too much lace will be over powering. A "V" back will look lovely and deemphasize the shoulder. A straight line going across in any way will mimic the line of the shoulder and make the shoulders more prominent. Same with the front. A straight line across the bust will make things look broader. A "V" neck with a high round neck of a thin mist of mesh you can see through would be stunning. Make sure the focus is in the center or off center. A bow, pearls. crystals, rhinestones, in the middle of the "V" or bust. That will bring the eye in. God bless your marraige, I hope you are as happy as I have been for 24 yrs. See Ya!

Go try on various styles. Even though you have wide shoulders, everyone is made differently & the general dress may not work for you. For example, I was always told a halter would be best since I have a large bust (DD). However, when I tried halters on, because of my build, my top half looked even bigger. Go with an open mind, try on a little bit of everything. I had the same worry with my dress, it staying up, but I ended up getting a faulous strapless dress & it's not even a worry. A well made dress will support you.

I have modeled for bridal magazines in chicago & we do all sizes.....Stay away from capped sleeves or sleeves in general. A halter (ties behind th neck) with a moderate V (cleavage but not too much) would be flattering coupled w/ a corseted midriff and a full or half (not as bulky), princess (almost like ballgown) skirts. This will give you a very feminine hour glass figure, evening out the large shoulder/chest to hip/bottom ratio. Hope it helps! Good Luck and Congrats!!!

Everyone is going to have a different view on this. Many people with wide shoulders and D cups (myself included on all of the above) will have different body shapes, so it still differs person to person. Myself, I couldn't wear a halter top dress, as it would make me look like a football player, accentuate my shoulders and arms, which is exactly what I don't want. I ended up getting a strapless a-line gown, which I adore and suits me well. But just because it worked for me, doesn't mean it's going to please you. Go and try tons of different styles of dresses on and see what you like!
Good luck, and happy hunting! :)

I agree, a halter will probably fit better and hold you in without having to worry about it falling down or one of "the girls" popping out. You can always wear a shawl or wrap if that would make you more comfortable about your shoulders. Everyone will be looking at how beautiful you look in that dress, I doubt anyone will notice your "wide" shoulders. Congratulations :)

A halter dress will accentuate your shoulders. Not a good choice. You'll likely have the same problem with a strapless or thin-strapped dress as well. I'd recommend a dress with thick straps, or one with capped sleeves.

i have wide shoulders myself...halters make mine look more narrow if you will....halters will also give good support to your breasts and create a distraction to the wideness of your shoulders...stay away from strapless-that will make your shoulders seem even more wide...also try dresses with V shaped necks...remember when you go shopping to bring the people who know you best and ask them for their opinions...

NOT a strapless, or spaghetti-strapped little item.
You probably would be best going for a traditional-type gown with sleeves, maybe a nice sweetheart neckline.
