Steer clear of Bells, Teachers and the Famous Grouse for one.

With any whisky, you get what you pay for.

Chivas Regal is pretty good, either the 18 or 12 year olds.

Other than that, you might want to try Justerini & Brooks Rare (J&B), Dewars, and Royal Salut.

If you want a malt, pick a speyside if you are new to drinking whisky and work up from there. Blends are yuchi.

Johnny Walker Blue Label is generally considered among the top of bleded Scotches. That is, if you go by price tag.
Chivas Regal is a very good mid-range blend, as is Famous Grouse.
