The context of the question is within the Christian biblical revelation, but also universal, in that forgiveness - the cancellation of debt - is central to the Good News that is to be proclaimed to the world.

I believe christianity started out with something like that. But power mongers created inquisitions, fear, and "indulgences." They can't profit is forgiveness is free.

Forgiveness is free for the asking (with a pure heart, and honest request for forgiveness). That's about a free as you can get. After that the past doesn't exist in God's eyes.
And, in that context, forgiveness is automatic. All you have to do is ask.
What you're asking is if there is any responsibility on your part to obtain forgiveness. It's just a prayer away.

If forgiveness of sins was free, then there would be no need for a Savior to come and die for the sins.

Before Jesus died, those who wanted forgiveness had to kill an unblemished lamb and offer it as a sacrifice. The lamb came at a cost and forgiveness of sin must also come with a cost - the blood of Jesus.

Forgiveness of sin... the cancellation of our debt ... is indeed central to the Good News. However, it is not automatic.

Jesus came to die to so that we might have forgiveness of sin but at John 3:16 he said "for God loved the world so much that he gave his only begotten son that those EXERCISING FAITH in him might not be destroyed but gain everlasting life." Notice the active vert used.

Also at Phillipians 2:12 the Apostle Paul told us to "keep working out [our] salvation with fear and trembling."

We have to work to deserve the value of Christ's sacrifice.

Forgiveness is free , but not cheap- it cost Jesus His life on the cross. It is not automatic though, we have a choice to accept His forgiveness or not. Christ is the way the truth and that life, no man can come to the Father but by Him. Yes it is GOOD NEWS- just think of it- we deserved the death penalty and Jesus took our place. Just accept that gift!!

Forgiveness for all sin is automatic and free - if you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior. That's it. It's free because Jesus paid the price, not us. You don't see any one of us willing to let ourselves be cruicified for mankind. There is a huge difference between Christianity and other religions. Other religions you have to DO. You have to participate in all kinds of rituals and things to achieve paradise. In Christianity, it's DONE. Jesus did it for us. Two simple letters seperate Christianity in a big way from all others. That's what makes it free. All you have to do is Acknowledge it and accept it.

What if forgiveness for all sin was automatic - and free?

Jesus reconciled all men already. it is a matter of receiving the Gift.

So Jesus has made it universally available to all. but He can not force it upon those whom do not ask for it. for this would violate free will. A right He gave mankind when He created man (male & female).

If all forgiveness was automatic then there would not be an offense to begin with. By the way forgiveness is free, Jesus paid the price. however, discipleship has a cost.

Do you mean one would not have to acknowledge Christ? Because if one has accepted Christ I believe that what you are saying is true. We sin every day and in ways we forget about or don't even acknowledge as sin. Christ is our High Priest in Heaven, making intercession for us.
