my mom might get an xk8 convertable and it has 83,000 miles on it for $17000...i dont know much about jags so i was wondering about how long until it would start having problems, what will go wrong at those times, how much it will cost for those problems, and is it worth it?

There are two weak spots on the early XK8's, unfortunately both can be very expensive.

1) Timing chain tensioners. The timing chain tensioners are weak. You should have the car inspected by a competent Jaguar mechanic (not the guy at the local gas station). New, uprated tensioners should be installed. If the tensioners fail, you lose the motor.

2) Cylinder liners. The early XK8's had cast in place liners made of a material called Nikasil. They tend to wear out prematurely. It's a good idea to get a compression test done prior to purchase. If the compression is even a little below spec, have a leakdown test done. If ring leakage is indicated, run. If the liners are gone, it's a full engine rebuild, which will cost almost what you paid for the car.

they are nice, although break down a lot, i wouldn't spend 17 grand on a jag with that many miles, id buy a used lexus or something else, if you're looking for something reliable
