You're not studying orthodontics.

Because orthodontics is a specialization of dentistry. Same reason you have to be a doctor before you become a surgeon, or an endocrinologist, or any other specialty. That's just how it works.

Because you need to know the basics of teeth and anatomy before you learn a specialty. It is not just a matter of pushing and pulling teeth with wires. Besides, before teeth can be moved, you often need to create spaces for them to go to and to fix bad teeth.
