I live in NJ were gun laws are insane and the country sheriff has refused me a long gun license. In nj the sheriff can refuse you for any reason and they dont have to tell you why. Anyway. I live in a suburb with some moderate crime abd gang activity and I also am a civil war buff. I own a 1861 springfield rifle musket ( its a reproduction), I would like to load it and keep it for a home defense weapon. Do you think this would be a good idea under my circumstances?

It would certainly be better than nothing. I find it incredible that you are denied the right to own a firearm, even in NJ. It is absurd and you should get a lawyer. Even if you are not a member of the NRA they may be able to help you.

I would never live under such restrictions. I don't trust ANY government that doesn't trust me with a firearm. It doesn't seem possible that they can prevent you from purchasing a firearm at all. Do they allow you to vote?

If you're a civil war buff, you should know that keeping a rifled musket loaded for an extended period of time will cause the powder to corrode the inside of the barrel. The powder will also collect condensation and may not fire when you need it to.

Also, a rifle that long would be more than a bit unwieldy in a house...the bad guy would get to you long before you could swing the rifle around to aim at him.

If I were you, I'd appeal the sheriff's decision and take it as far as I could. In the mean time, go buy yourself a Louiseville Slugger or a big dog.

I just moved out of New Jersey after 8 years and now live in South Carolina, and the first thing I did when I got here was go get my CWP (that's Concealed Weapon Permit). Thank God South Carolina isn't like New Jersey in that aspect!

You have my most sincere sympathy.

Screw the Sheriff and get a 12 gauge pump shotgun, just the sound of racking a round will send most people running.

Use Buckshot

Should be just fine that's what they used in the mid 1800's.Easier said than done but consider moving out of state and join the NRA.

Absolutely!!You have the constitution of the U.S. behind you and even if they(the N.J. sheriff) find a way around it, we have a saying that says;I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.In other words,if you shoot the dirt bag before he kills you,you still are alive to go to trial!!Good luck and shoot to kill!

Why musket?
That takes more time to reload compared to the other rifles and shot guns.
