That fairly varies. Most "free" antiviruses only catch around 90% of the viruses out there. Ones that are bought, catch aroun 98-99%. Bit Defender has been rated as the best this year so far, AVG is rated the worse.
Look for antivirus reviews to get an idea. If you want only "free" Avast is better than avg.

THe best ive seen its not free unless you can get a patch/crack for it but nod32 is the best out updates like 20 times a day.

I do not reccomend the free programs however if free is what you want I recomend avg free.
If you want to buy the software, I personally use zone alarm anti virus and have no problems with it.
