Well any small dog can fit a male ego, but if you are concerned about the look, and hey, lots of guys are....
You can find a small dog at the pound for a low cost, already neutered and has shots etc. and some are already house trained though they may need a bit of reminding after shelter life.
There are lots of small to medium sized dogs any of which could be a dog you feel happy with.
If you are looking to buy a purebreed, here are some breeds that are smallish and might seem more of a "man's" dog to you.
Pug (they do shed quite a bit)
Boston Terrier
Shiba Inu
Schnauzer (requires regular grooming)
Sheltie
Beagle
Miniature Pinscher
Jack Russell Terrier
Here's a site that can help you determine a dog breed you might like:

OK, I can tell you're not going to like my idea of a Yorkie because you think they are not masculine. You are sooo wrong; but I will move forward. Jack Russell Terriors are apartment sized dogs. Or you could even keep a Yorkie cut short, then it would look more like a boy, I suppose. My boyfriend was the original owner of my Yorkie and the two of them are sooo close. Everyone, male and female, love this little Yorkie. You'd end up falling in love with one, too.

Minature Pinchers. This really big tough guy i used to live by had this Min Pin he was the toughst little dog i've ever seen and that guy took this dog with him everywhere it was a sight to see because that dood was sooo tall walking with this little dog. But the dog looked just like a regular Doberman just tiny
**** just a side note****
I see alot of ppl saying Jack Russells They are defintely a great dogs i have 2 of them and i love them to death but if you are not familiar with the breed i wouldnt recommend these dogs. They are very smart but very headstrong... and need tons of attention and training. Please any dog you get research the breed and make sure you can handle their needs.

dachshunds are pretty tough little f*ckers. Sure, they seem harmless and cute, but they can be right butch! I had one as a kid who got hit by a car, then stood up and chased to car down the street.
Corgis are smaller dogs who are kind of tough dogs, too. A Springer Spaniel is a man's dog as well, but they are pretty high energy and may not be suited to apartment living.

l think a Boston terrier is consider a masculine dog and yet cute enough for any girl to make over. it is smart easy to train and loyal, but then a good trainer has that with every breed. good luck in finding the dog you want.

Dachshund are tough little dogs and like to hunt small game, mine has been the end to two hamsters. I think Pugs are masculine looking. Chihuahuas have a huge attitude, mine believes he is 200lbs.

Check into a Jack Russell Terrier they are small, fun, and don't look girlie. They are high energy so they need a place to run every so often.
