Should be business as usual. Keep using your CIS6 card number as your self employment number.

Don't worry about the new CIS scheme as nothing much is changing except for the amount of paperwork for contractors.

If you are a sub-contractor that is already registered under the scheme, then Inland Revenue will automatically be transferring you to the new scheme without you having to do anything. Most sub-contractors either hold a CIS4 or CIS6 card.

If you are registering for the new CIS scheme after the 6th April, then you no longer have to visit the Inland Revenue office, as all of this can now be done over the telephone from what I have been told.

You will receive from the contractor a tax certificate in place of CIS vouchers, which the contractor normally sends to you each month.

The new scheme has been designed mainly for the contractor as opposed to the sub-contractor, to cut down on the amount of paperwork and returns that is necessary under the old scheme.

You can also telephone Inland Revenue's new CIS helpline which is 0845 300 0581.
