How do I say no to a guy when he asks me out if I am shy?

A guy asked me to formal but I dont know what to say because I want a date but I dont want to go with him and I dont like saying no to people because it makes me feel bad

wow. that has definitely happened to me. two options are: you could go with him explicitly "as friends" or tell him no and don't go to the formal with anyone.
another thing you could try suggesting is that you go in a group of people. maybe tell him that you are not comfortable going to the formal as his date, but that he would be welcome to go to dinner and the dance with a group of your friends. this may also give you an option of inviting the boy you would really like to go with to be in your group.

Just be honest with him. Tell him you are flattered by the offer, but you are kinda interested in someone at the moment and want to see if he might ask. Be nice as not to scar him from ever talking to you again. He mustered up the courage to ask, that was a big deal for him. Be sure to thank him for the offer though. Keep it cool and if the two of you end up not getting dates, then maybe you can talk to him about going as friends only. Just to have someone to go with. Good luck hun.

talk to him and tell him all you feel, and if you are so shy dont tell him in person , send him an e-mail or whatever, that way you won't feel bad, cuz you are just saying your feelings and that's it,good luck
