Uh, it won't make you sick, but it's lice. It'll make you itchy. Take your bird to the vet and your vet will give you instructions on what to do with the lice your bird has.

bird lice does not affect people.

If your little friend has lice; do NOT use sevin dust. Pet stores have little bird protectors you can hang on the cage. They have pyrethyum powder that will kill the lice and not hurt the bird. After you get a bird protector cover the cage and keep the little friend covered most of the time until the powder takes care of the lice.

Cockatiels are easily scared at night and will begin thrashing around; so when you hear the bird thrashing around at night; uncover the bird partially until it can see the cage and climb back on the perch then re-cover the cage.

With proper care of your bird lice problem asap, you shouldn't expect a human transfer. Get the necessary medication from your vet and treat your bird. Really sanitize that cage. Hot water and a disinfectant. You can use a general pesticide but must rinse several times. That way your bird doesn't inadvertently get poisoned.Everything should go fine with no human transfer. Have a tweet weekend.

DON'T USE 7 DUST!!!!!
This is extremely toxic stuff! Go to a pet shop and get some Bird bath spray. This has Pyrethrins and Piperonyl Butoxide at levels that are SAFE for PET BIRDS. 7 Dust is used on poultry..chickens, ducks, turkeys. It's too poisonous for a cockateil or cockatoo or macaw!
I have pet cockatoos and a duck and 3 rescued geese, so I hip on this problem that you are having with lice.
Call your vet if you are unsure about any of this.
Don't worry about getting it from them, just shower your bird with a bird bath spray and make sure he's dry and in a warm area before you put him to bed. A wet and cold bird in a cold room is a major NO NO.
After you're done just take a hot shower. All will be OK.

Are you sure it's lice? Maybe your bird is molting and it's bird dandruff.
Unless your bird was caught in the wild, or has been exposed to wild birds, I doubt it's lice.
You can always call your local vets office or human society and they may have a phone number of an aviary and you can what they'd suggest.

I highly doubt that you have bird lice. You should see a doctor to find out what is making you sick and your bird should see a vet to find out what the problem is and how to treat it.

DO NOT purchase one of those lice and mite things that you hang on the cage. They normally don't do anything except expose your bird to poison.

Only "chewing lice" are present on birds. I would think just to dust seven-dust on his head, his neck, and on top under his wings, and also his tail, just try to cover his whole body w/it and it'll be ok :) bTw. try not to get any in his eyes. I've never heard of bird lice getting humans sick. Good Luck ;l)
