Definately take your kitty to the vet for diagnosis. The best thing you can do it switch it's food-slowly- to a holistic food. Wellness is great, there are no byproducts which makes it easier to digest so it is gentle on your aging cat's body. You can find where to buy it here: http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com/wellness/
Also, Salmon and salmon oil is great for their skin and have tons of omega 3s so I would recomend Grizzly Salmon Oil. You spray it on their food and they think they are in heaven. You can find where to buy that here: http://www.grizzlypetproducts.com/

This may seem like it costs quite a bit more than the normal stuff that you would but in the store, but I promise it is well worth it. I was skeptical when I first heard about it, but I went for it and my animals are very healthy and happy creatures with beautiful, itch-free skin. Good luck!

Please take your cat to a good cat vet. Your cat is now a senior and is entering the age when his or her health is fragile.
The itchy skin may be a symptom of something serious.

With younger cats, where the itching is because of "flea allergy dermatitis" (a skin allergy triggered by a flea bite or something else) there is a product called Dermcaps that is very effective - just give the dose on the bottle once a day for a few weeks, and it will clear up the skin. Dermcaps are available in pet stores (not big box stores like Petsmart, but family owned petstores). The product is in gel capsules which are too big for a cat to swallow - so snip the gel cap open with scissors and squirt the contents in the cat's mouth. Buy the small size (for cats) and give one a day. Dermcaps contain essential fatty acids that aren't present in commercial cat foods in high enough doses or proper ratios for some cats.

I'm a former cat rescuer and under veterinary guidance have permanently cured cats of flea allergy dermatitis with Dermcaps. Your vet may be able to suggest a different brand that is as effective, if that is your cat's diagnosis.

Don't assume the "flea allergy" diagnosis of your cat's itchy skin - I recently had a cat's skin flare up because of a food allergy, and another cat's weird dermatities turned out to be skin cancer, caught in the nick of time (and removed) by a good vet.

Treasure your furry buddy!

I've been using holistic products on my pets for about 20 years now, but it would be irresponsible of me to suggest any home remedies until you have a vet's diagnosis as to what is causing the chronic skin problem and itch. If it's mange, or flea bite dermatitis, only a vet's medicine will get it under control. The vet might give her a cortisone injection to stop the inflammation, or an antihistamine injection for the same purpose. Once you have the problem under control, only then would you use holistic means to continue the body's healing process.
