I have a friend that just called me and wants me to take them to Mental Health because he is depressed. He works 96 hours a week on a farm and gets paid $300. He is upset over a girl. Can he get SSI for having a mental problem?

if he is indicating that he is suicidal....please take him to be admitted.if he is desperate enough to call about this...he must be really struggeling.

he can worry about paying the bill later. they will work with him on that . for now...he just needs some professional help.
also,i am from the midwest and know how the farming thing goes.to be a farmhand in this day and age is almost barbaric. unless you own a co-op...the farmers and thier help is usually underpaid and overworked. so sad.
his situation sounds pretty bad. at $300 dollars a week...he will never get ahead or have much time to enjoy life.

I would venture to guess that no he will not get SSI. There are a lot of people who get turned down every year for much more reasons than you state here. I get it and I had a lot more on my plate that a bad job (I had no job) and a guy issues (I'm a girl). I had to go to be evaluated my many different doctors and still the first time I was denied because the evaluator said I could still do 'meaningful work' SSI isn't an automatic thing. You really have to have severe physical and or mental health issues. It also takes a long time to get on the program...in my case almost 4 years and their were lawyers and doctors involved every step of the way. I still get SSI and it is not enough to live on so I still have to work. My advice...have your friend get a new job that pays better and find a new girlfriend. Good luck to you.

He won't get SSI. If every time someone got upset they got SSI no one would work. The whole world is depressed dear. Tell your friend other girls will come along and to get over it. If he is seriously that upset than he needs some counseling not SSI.

It is very difficult to get SSI. People with serious disabilities get turned down over and over so your friend doesn't have much of chance. Maybe he would be less depressed if he got a better job and found a new girlfriend.

if he is asking you to take him, let them diagnose him, and he will find out from there, if it is keeping him from working properly, he might be able to get it...and yes, under certain circumstances, he will be eligible.
