I actually don't think the cost of acquiring a dog is the issue. The best dogs I have had in my life were free - strays or 'unwanted' dogs that I acquired. I have also had pure bred dogs that cost quite a lot. They are wonderful. 3 out of 4 were very healthy. The 4th had early arthritis issues (an Akita). The care for these all of these dogs was always top notch. They got high quality food, regular vet checks, emergency vets if needed, plenty of toys and whatever else they needed. The point is the upkeep - that should NEVER be considered cheap - yes, I will use the low cost spay and neuter clinic. Yes I will take advantage of the free rabies clinic my town provides. But I will also take my dog to the emergency clinic and spend the $2000 to fix her when the 18 pound mutt jumped the 4 1/2 foot fence, and wound up getting hit by a car. Pets are part of the family. You do what needs to be done. They are not a throw-away commodity. You don't neglect them today just because you can replace them tomorrow.

A puppy dog is so needy and starved for attention that it will follow the human it belongs to around, yapping for attention. Leave it alone in a kennel or even another room and it will whine pathetically for hours.
It will eventually gnaw on things and destroy furniture.
If you have been called a puppy dog, its very likely because you are seen to be behaving this way. (Its not endearing.)
