I have a 68 pound dog with dry skin; he's scratching most of the time. I have heard that fish oil is good for that, but don't know what dosage to give him per day. If you can tell me, or have any other remedies that you would recommend, that would be great. Also if you could provide links to sites with relevant information, that would be helpful also. Thank you.

What are you feeding the dog? If the food has corn in the first few ingredients, that would be my first choice for the problem. Corn is the most common allergen in dogs.

Don't treat the symptom, treat the problem. What does your vet say?

First of all: DIET. I'd recommend either Natures Recipe Venison and Rice or Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Venison and Potato. Dogs are less sensitive to that meat and both those brands are good for dogs with food allergies.
From your VET you can get 3V Skin Caps with Omega 3, Vit A, D and E supplement.
Also NutriVed Vitamin, also availiable via your VET.
Nature's Recipe also has some treats out that are specifically for skin and coat. Other brands do too.
Be careful what treats you give to your dog. Stay away from the died and/or fried ones and rawhides, pigs ears etc. unless they are made in america. (some brands from other countries use Formaldehyde as a preservative, doesn't have to be listed and is common in especially compressed rawhides.)
Instead get hard biscuits, Nylabones, Denta Stix and such for your dog to chew on. I avoid "Greenies" because all three of my dogs have thrown them up from biting off and swallowing too big of chunks and they don't digest well.
I have heard Canidae is a great brand too, but have never tried it.
If you were ever to consider a raw diet, here is a good instructional site on 'how-to'.

I know this is a 6 year old question but I just want to tell my experience with dog's dry skin,. A lady from India told me that Coconut oil brand Parachute cures all kind of skin problem in human as well as dogs. The result was great! I applied every 2 days followed for a brush in 3 weeks he had a clean skin and beautiful fur. Dogs liked the coconut oil bad is ok, also, I add once a week one spoon of cooking coconut oil to his food. the problem is over.

first try to understand why he has dry skin
does he have ticks/fleas - if he does pls use anti tick/flea shampoo and make him wear a tick collar
is his diet balanced? giving him fish without bones will help. Its very rich in omega3 fatty acids. u can also give him rex wheatgerm oil.
do you have a carpet in your house? if you do make sure you vaccum your carpet regularly coz a lot of mties breed there.
is there subsequent hair loss and if so what's the pattern. if its along his spine near the back its most probable that its flea dermatitis. if tis in a spot it could be scabies. if the hair goes away exposing very delicate dry irritated skin, it could be mange.
you can also groom regularly, but not too often as this can also irritate the skin.
If your dog stays too wet then it could be fungal..........
that would be smelly.
but balancing the diet, bathing with a good ph balanced shampoo, regular grooming..............should help your dog
