I love this question. It's not ok but they have to do something so they can sleep at night.

Ok, I am answering in order to clear up a common misconception that you have just illustrated in this question.
The God of the Bible was not the first God. If you took the time to study the history of your religion, you would find that the God of the Bible came after numerous other Gods. How can you chastise people for "making up" other Gods when that is essentially what Christians did?
Yes, I believe in a higher power. Ultimately, I think we're all talking about the same thing (a greater being). However, I am willing to admit I don't know it all and I will never fully understand. Thus, I do not push my beliefs on others as you seem to do.

This is actually a very good question.
I walked away from my childhood faith because I did not like the God of the Bible. I desired things that were contradictory to the Bible message and I started to make things to suit my life better. That really did not bring me happiness.
I realized that I do not need the new ideas, I just needed to be reminded about the old ones. God is God no matter what I think of Him. It would not harm God a bit if I said that He does not exist, but it would hurt me a big deal if I did not exist to Him. I started to have a hunger for the God's Word.
God brought me back to His arms. And that is a great place to be. I want to be with Him forever, so I need to go to Jesus for that. All the other religions demand so much from me and I would not know if I ever would measure up. Jesus took care of my salvation. I accept that gift. Once you give your hear to God, you also want to do good..even though it is not for my deeds that I get saved...I get saved only by the mercy and grace of God. And what is not to like with this way.

Personally, I believe there are at least two different Gods in the Bible. The first has a name, Jehovah, who has chosen people, who is Jealous and a man of war, who dwells in darkness and has evil spirits at his command.
Then there is the God of Jesus, the Father, who goes unnamed because there was no one before him to give him a name. He does not have chosen people, but is the father of all. He is a God of pure love, a God of light with no darkness at all. He has no jealousy in him and cherishes the peacemakers, and cannot even think evil.
These are only a few of the stark contrasts between the two. I am not making this up, it is all written right there in the Bible.

Why do people who DO like the God that's in the Bible think it's ok to make one up?
Same thing, of course.

That's what man has done with older religions since religion began. That's what the Egyptians thought about the Moses. That's what the Jews thought about Jesus, etc.,....
Some think of it as heresy, others think of it as refinement, still others think its all a bunch or bs anyway.
Jesus was considered a heritic in his day, yet today, many see Jesus as the son of God. Nobody really knows - we have our beliefs without knowing for sure - that's what faith is.
Faith only becomes a problem when we allow our faith to be threatened by a differing faith in others. To be a religious absolutist to the extent that people die over it is MAN's mistake, whether there is a God or not.
One person's religion is another person's cult - no matter what the religion.
This is MY view on the topic anyway, but that's just ME.

Well, mine are much older than that in the Bible. Take a look at ancient Egyptian texts, and you'll find the prototype of Jesus. The Bible is a relative newcomer in the world of Gods.

LMAO!!!
this is rich!
just so you know Christianity is a relatively new religion compared to how old the earth actually is, everything in the bible was taken from other religions, so what makes you think that its ok to worship a man made god?

Honey, they are all made up. Each civlization creates a supernatural being to explain the unknown and the unexplainable.
It gives comfort to the unconsolable and power to the demigogs.
The dream of a perfect heaven also makes the disenfranchised
and the poor easier to control here in this less perfect place.

I don't need a book to know God, and because a book gives a different concept of God does not make mine false. God is too big for any religion in my view. They all limit him/her.

There's all kinds of Gods out there, besides the one in the Bible, and they (including the one in the Bible) are all made up anyways.
I'm sure one could cook up a pretty good religion and find some followers, and it would be no less believable than anything else out there.
