Your mom has probably never lived with a cat, or has only lived with or been exposed to cats that were not well-trained. Cats are very clean animals and do not smell, but their urine does. As long as your cat is litter-trained or goes outside, and you keep the litter box cleaned every day, there should not be an odor problem. Cats can also be trained to stay off of certain pieces of furniture (like the kitchen table, but probably not your couch), but you really would not want to deprive him of his natural affinity for jumping. They are very agile and rarely knock anything over or break anything. A short-haired cat does not shed very much, especially if he is brushed daily. The hair can be removed from furniture by a lint remover. You might try to explain these things to your mom and promise to take on the responsibility for training and maintaining your pet. You might also suggest a trial run. Tell her that if it doesn't work out, you will find the cat a new home (make sure you really can. Too many cats find themselves at the shelters as it is...that is, by the way, where you should get your cat). If your mom is dead set against having a cat, there is probably nothing you can do, but there may still be hope. Good luck. I think your mom would really learn to enjoy and love the cat's company if she gave it a chance.

You could convice your dad and he'll convice your mom.....
if you do get the okay, go to the humane society or you could go the the city pound...maybe you should take your dog along and see the reaction...just remember even if your dog likes cats it may not be the other way around...

if all fails, get a beta fish

cats don't smell, i've had about 12 cats in my lifetime so far, my suggestion is to make a powerpoint, that's what i did when i asked for gerbils, and it worked like a charm, remember to use lots of pictures, and show you are responsible

Opt with hand raised kitten instead. They get along better with your dog and it's harder to say no to a cute little furrball.
