Either your video card does not support OpenGL, a graphics API standard that allows many different software companies to make the most of any video card, or your drivers are not installed properly. Check to see if your video card supports OpenGL. If it does, try reinstalling the drivers. Otherwise you should get yourself a new video card. If you just want to be able to play the game, any card above a geforce 4 by nvidia and most Radeons by ATI will let you play the game, and you can pick one up for about $45. If, on the other hand, you want to rock the game at it's full potential, you should consider upgrading your entire system.
People whine about PCs being to out-of-date immediately, but my feeling is that it's incredible for the gaming experience that so much of software exploits the cutting edge of the hardware, and that's good for the gamer. Most software will let you be backwards compatible by at least 3 years, so if you build yourself a whole new system for $650 (which is what I did last spring) you will be good without spending anything you don't want to for 3 years. But if you want to stay on the cutting edge, that's a different story.
Good luck with Doom3, that's one scary *** game. Turn out the lights, crank the speakers, and be prepared to soil yourself.
Later!

Doom 3 requires a certain type of video card, not a brand but a late model video card that can do certain things that older ones can't. You have a video card that does not support the features needed to run Doom 3 correctly or at all.

If you still have the box look at the minimum system requirements and check to see if your pc can handle it.

Welcome to the wonderful world of PC gaming. Where just when you thought you had enough you have to go out and buy a whole new PC all over again.

Either your computer's video adapter doesn't have some required feature like hardware T&L (transform & lighting) or you need to install a newer version of DirectX from Microsoft.

Check your DirectX version first- it would be a shame to buy new hardware if it's only a software update you need.
