i would say the more they are friends, the more there is to risk from trying to make the friendship something deeper. there is a whole spectrum of difference between being a friend and being a lover. the risk is - if the love relationship goes sour, then not only do you lose a boy/girl friend, but you also lose a friend. you need to ask your self if its worth the risk.

No, it's not required at all. It just so happens to be a common thing, like the first post said, because both individuals have broken the ice with each other.
At the same time though, it helps to have a good friendship first, because the respect has already been established. Those who start out this way have a better chance at a longer-lasting relationship, because you know the friendship is already there, which happens to be an important factor in a successful relationship.

All I can say it that I hope you get a good answer for this one!! I hate that every other person says friends should date, and the other that they shouldn't. One thing I will tell you is that I like to get to know guys before I date them, but I would not want to be too good of a friend if it's not someone that you're already friends with, like a new guy or something. I did date my best guy friend once, and I practically fell in love with him. We did end up splitting, but it was not an ugly breakup at all. We are still friends today and this happened about 3 1/2 years ago.

I think that is the best way to go, so many people jump into relationships based on attraction, without getting to know eachother first. You may find out that you guys aren't that compatable as lover's and decide you just want to be friends. That way you have lost nothing but still have a friend. If you jump into relationship too fast you run the risk of it not working out and never really becoming friends.

I used to think that getting to know each other takes to much time...time that could be used to count the number of weeks you could have been going out for. However, i now see that people should at least know something about each other before going out. For example, a girl who was friends (or more like acquaintances) with my brother liked him. So he asked her out. Their relationship only lasted one month because when it came down to it, they had nothing to talk about. So yes, i think you should at least know more than just their name before you ask someone out.

Sometimes the 'really good friends' thing, depending on your ages, can lead to looking at one another as brother / sister - A buddy of mine just went through that scenario. They went to kiss each other and he stopped because he felt like he was going to kiss his sister...............
I don't know........All situations are a little different!!
Good Luck!!

sometimes.....I think thats how you would get to know someone enough to figure out if you really want to be with. It lets you know his qualities and him yours so if you want him and you're stuck in friend mode make sure you look cute and flirt away. touching is always good but only were you and him are both comfortable.good luck

It sure doesn't hurt to be good friends before dating. Either way you will never know until you go out.

It helps but totally unnecessary. Any stranger could turn out to be a future husband.
