These birds are all over my backyard. They look like sparrows, but bigger. Brown birds with russett brown brest.

I think it is most likely an American Robin.

With black head, white on the primary wing feathers, white edged tail, red eye? Are they scratching at the ground back and forth with both feet together?
These are observations you can note and transmit to us for a more positive ID.
If the bird matches the description above along with the russett breast,
95% sure, Rufous-sided Towhees
otherwise
possibly American Robins
