Getting a dog does work, but it`s a bit drastic. If the cat is using you garden as a toilet, then try using a citronella based product on and around those areas. Cats hate the smell of citrus. There is a product on the market that emits a high-pitchd sound that cats also dislike, it does work as my mum has one but unfortunately if your under the age of 30 it`s uncomfortable to your ears as well. When my dad was alive, he used to sneak out and throw golf balls at them, the cats got wise to him though and as soon as they heard the gate latch click, they bolted over the fence.

Difficult one...
Besides the obvious of getting a dog, try sprinkling white pepper, citrus peel and crushed / chopped garlic on the soil / flower beds.
OR
Completely pave the garden, thus resulting, in your garden, being a NON friendly Cat toilet.
Good luck!

I have a dog and i still get pestered with cats. Put some citrus peel on your soil, thay dont like it or failing that shoot them with staples from a staple gun when you see them digging up your plants and soiling your grass with their filthy little bums.My dog doesn't go in my neighbours gardens but all 12 of their cats come into mine to use it as a toilet. I HATE CATS. Good Luck........

Hi Miles...Common odours that are effective deterrents for cats are:
Citronella works best for cats as well as citrus scents such as orange or lemon (primarily towards cats), cayenne pepper, coffee grounds, pipe tobacco, lavender oil, lemon grass oil, citronella oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, and mustard oil.
"Havahart's Cat Repellent" uses capsaicin pepper and oil of mustard as its active ingredients. It repels by both taste and odor, has a lemon scent.
Every animal responds differently to each of these. Some will not be phased by them and others will be quite revolting.
For training purposes they are applied on items that are to encourage avoidance behaviours and not for use with a squirt bottle as they could harm the eyes or respiratory system. Test each substance and observe to see which works as a deterrent so that accidental injestion does not occur as some could then be fatal.
Coleus plants can be effective, but every cat responds differently so it is uncertain without experimenting.
Many people believe mothballs work, however they are considered toxic and should NOT be used. Here's more information on this:
http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/ope/enotes/showarticle.cfm?id=89
MOTHBALLS are toxic to cats which contains the ingredient Naphthalene. Mothballs are approximately twice as toxic as paradichlorobenzene, and cats are especially sensitive to naphthalene. Signs of ingestion of naphthalene mothballs include emesis, weakness, lethargy, brown-colored mucous membranes and collapses. Paradichlorobenzene mothballs may cause GI upset, ataxia, disorientation, and depression. Elevations in liver serum biochemical values may occur within 72 hours of indigestion.

They don't like citrus, so you could try leaving orange peel out.
Or garden centres actually sell lion poo, moggys are supposed to be warned off by the scent of a larger animal. You might want to get a pair of gloves with that.

Orange peel works cos they hate the smell, as does pepper. Old cd's sticking out of the ground are supposed to scare them cos of the reflections. Other than that, I'm with the others - borrow a dog!!
