The main carriers serving Des Moines are Northwest (transfer in Minneapolis), United (transfer in Denver or Chicago), American (transfer in St. Louis), and Delta (transfer in Salt Lake City or Atlanta). All will require a transfer and "no frills" service, but all have fairly frequent service at reasonable prices. My personal preference would be Northwest, but they are all pretty much interchangable. You may find it cheaper to fly out of Ontario or Burbank rather than LAX.

Allegiant would probably be the cheapest, but they don't fly from Los Angeles. You could get a flight on Southwest to Las Vegas, and then fly from Vegas to Des Moines on Allegiant. Each round-trip flight will probably be around $100 plus taxes. If you do that option, though, make sure you leave three or four hours or more between the flights in case of delays.

The bad news is there are no direct flights from LAX to DSM. so you will be "going through" somewhere. Since you are already sitting in front of your computer, why not log on the any of the large travel consolidators (Orbitz, Travelosity, etc.) and get a quote using the dates you wish to travel? My best guess is that the cheapest airline would be USAirways (America West) via Phoenix. My guess would be about $350.00-$400.00. If Long Beach is closer for you, they also fly out of there. If you use ONE airline you wont have to lug your luggage to a different carrier when you change planes.

Go to Travelocity and search. The fare depends on when you purchase, when you want to go and return. You will find that ALL possibilities involve a connecting flight. Today the least expensive advance purchase fare appears to be $263. Several airlines have that fare. Tomorrow or next week, who knows?
Few pay for first class. I'll venture that most first class passengers get there by accumulating miles in a frequent flier program.

probably cheaper to take Delta into Cedar Rapids and then get a rental car and drive to Des Moines.
