I am looking for a yummy recipe for icing. I am used to making the normal Wilton buttercream recipe, but I don't like the texture or flavor. I ate a cake once that was iced with buttercream icing, but the icing was more shortening based. Best icing I have ever tried. It had a soft smooth texture, and wasn't so sweet. It also was just as easy to decorate with as regular buttercream. Can anyone help?

The icing I am looking for has more of a shortening texture. Kind of slick feeling.

Buttercream Icing

6 tablespoons butter, softened (no substitutions)
3 tablespoons whipping cream, unwhipped (35%)
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups icing sugar
food coloring (optional)

In a bowl, beat together the butter, whipping cream and vanilla until smooth (about 3 minutes).
Add in icing sugar; beat very well until smooth, adding more if necessary to achieve desired consistency.
Note: In order for the icing to have a creamy texture, only whipping cream must be used.

Buttercream Icing

1 cup butter or margarine
1 cup vegetable shortening
2 lbs powdered sugar (8 cups)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon meringue powder (optional)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon almond extract
1/2-1 teaspoon clear butter flavoring
4-6 ounces whipping cream

Cream butter and shortening until fluffy.
Add sugar, meringue powder, about half of the cream, and continue creaming until well blended.
Add salt, flavorings and enough whipping cream to make the consistency you need.
Beat at medium speed until icing is fluffy.
You may substitute all shortening for the butter, which will give a pure white icing, but the flavor will not be quite as good.
I used butter and real vanilla and the icing turned out a very pale ivory, which I personally prefer to a stark-white icing.
The meringue powder gives the icing a light crust, but it remains soft underneath.

BUTTERCREAM ICING

1/2 c. Crisco shortening (highest grade)
1/2 tsp. vanilla or other flavoring
1/4 tsp. salt
1 drop buttercream flavor (optional)
4 tbsp. water
1 lb. powdered sugar, sifted

Mix shortening, flavoring, salt and buttercream flavor thoroughly together. Add powdered sugar and water and mix with an electric mixer at top speed to whipped cream consistency, 5 minutes. Keep sealed and in the refrigerator. Add more water as needed. This is decorator quality icing from a cake decorating class.
